How does digitalization affect basic skills in education?

Technology is a great tool if we take into consideration all the functions that we have access to. Humanity evolved, and so did technology, everything around us has a little bit of that in its creation. But we also have the kind of technology that brought us into the digital age: smartphones, robots, computers, apps, AI, and even more. We have been learning and trying to keep up to date as much as possible.

However, we are also losing our abilities, basic skills in manual tasks and even more concerning, we are losing control over our brain capacity. We cannot focus as we did before; our attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter. We want everything to be easy and instant, and so we never do anything entirely by ourselves anymore. We rely on shortcuts, quick fixes, and automated systems. We would forget everything but our phones.

This growing dependency is changing how we process information and how we solve problems. Instead of thinking deeply or memorizing important facts, we Google answers and swipe through content without really absorbing it. While technology can enhance our productivity, it can also weaken our independence if we’re not careful. It's important that we find a balance using technology to support us, not to replace our thinking, creativity, or essential human skills.
